Gender-based violence: A neglected barrier to women’s engagement in HIV services

Council Commentary, 15 September 2017—Julie Pulerwitz and Ellen Weiss (Population Council/Project SOAR) discuss findings from SOAR’s recent synthesis of the growing evidence of gender-based violence’s impact on HIV outcomes among women, particularly their engagement in the HIV care continuum. In addition, they also highlight recommendations that emerged from a meeting Project SOAR convened in early June 2017 at which evidence from newly completed and ongoing studies was reviewed and discussed with 50 HIV and violence experts, including researchers, practitioners, women’s advocates, and policymakers.
